The son of accomplished poster artist Vasily Suryaninov (1903-1992), Ruben graduated from the Academy of Arts of the Latvian SSR in 1956 and became a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR in 1961. Following in his father's footsteps of socio-political posters, Ruben's designs largely deal with Russian productivity, health and safety, sports, and national security. Suryaninov was awarded a Gold medal at the international health education poster competition in Bologna, Italy.
